RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017

We’re back in the office this week and have a chance to reflect on the highlights of RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017; the planting and flowers, sensational gardens and the colourful characters visiting the show.

The weather is always a question mark over the Chelsea Flower Show as it is in the majority an outdoor event, this year we had been anxious as the build up had seen torrential rain almost everyday.  However as the show opened the sunshine arrived and stayed for the duration, we couldn’t have wished for better weather; showing the gardens and all the outdoor products at their very best and putting a smile on all the visitor’s faces.

Best in Show

The gardens are the big draw for most visitors offering inspiration and insight into the incredible hard work involved in creating the show gardens for Chelsea Flower Show.  The Best Show Garden was the M&G Garden designed by James Basson.  The designer’s vision of a garden was created from a disused limestone quarry including a large botanical range of flora from Malta. Designed with great impact it delivers a hard message about the vulnerability of Malta’s natural landscapes and resources.

The Best Fresh Garden was designed by Kate Gould, City Living showing a an imagined space in an urban apartment block, providing the occupants with attractive and useable small gardens.  These multi-level gardens highlight the importance of greening inner city spaces, not only for residents’ enjoyment but also to benefit the environment as a whole.

The Best Artisan Garden was the Walker’s Wharf Garden supported by Doncaster Deaf Trust and designed by Graham Bodle. The garden reflects the beauty of industrial decay embellished by restrained plantings of conifers including pines and larch as well as lush woodland perennials.

This year we decided to collaborate with WaterAid by selling our concrete tea light holders at the show with all proceeds going to WaterAid, this proved a huge success and we are pleased to announce that we have raised £1,200, which will enable WaterAid to supply a school sanitation block for 250 children (£1050) and three wheelchair accessible toilets (£50 each) in Bangladesh.

People Watching at Cheslea Flower Show

Of course RHS Chelsea is mainly about the gardens and flowers but it’s also a great spot for fantastic people watching; whether that’s getting a glimpse of a Chelsea Pensioner in their full regalia, a celeb spot on press day or simply somebody with fantastic style to match the gardens.

Solus Decor have spent the week in Chelsea building our stand for the opening of Chelsea Flower Show 2017 next week.

We are lucky enough to have worked with some incredible suppliers this year and as we come to the end of the build up today we wanted to share a little about some of our suppliers at for Chelsea Flower Show 2017. We are very grateful for their support, hard work and excellent products.

TKE Landscaping are our main contractor who have brought the whole design together from concept and through to the build this week.  TKE Landscaping are a landscape gardening company based in Essex providing a wide range of garden services including garden design, maintenance, creating patios, path and driveways and erecting garden buildings and gazebos.  The build up this week has been a pleasure due to the skill and hard work of TKE who have great attention to detail and great problem solvers due to their knowledge and experience in the field.

Sourcing the right decking for our stand was a challenge when we were putting together the design for the stand.  We knew that given the English climate and the probability of rain at some time during the show we were keen to ensure that the flooring was anti slip, which led us to a composite decking.  The next challenge was finding the right colour, we were keen to ensure that the tone worked well with both our fire and water features and outdoor living seating area. Brooks Bros stepped in with their composite decking by Silvadec, which compliments all elements of the stand perfectly. Brooks Bros offer timber storage, ordering and selection services, added value machining and finishing.  With their state of the art facilities they are well placed to process your timber just the way you want it.

One of the keys elements of RHS Chelsea Flower Show is of course the the plants and flowers and we were keen to ensure that our stand reflected this and were naturally thrilled when Green Matters agreed to help us to add this element to the stand with a two living wall installations.  We are thrilled with the living walls supplied by Green Matters and the green element they add to our stand.  Green Matters provide a range of urban greening solutions including living roof, vertical greening, system development and supply and installation with their their experience and technical knowledge they are well placed to help you with your next project.

Given the temperamental nature of the British weather we were keen to ensure that we had some coverage to the stand to protect us from any rain showers and at the same time offering shade on the off chance that we have hot and sunny days for the duration of the show. Flybird Installations have provided a great awning that looks great and provides a great cover to the stand above our seating area;  great addition to our stand any outdoor living space.

Kyoto Design have added a special touch of luxury to our outdoor seating area with their bronze effect aluminium decorative screens, which create a great focal point with lighting behind to create a great atmosphere when the sun goes down.  Kyoto offer a wide range of designs that are perfect for indoor and outdoor use.
