The garden design for RHS Tatton Park entitled From Hop to Glass was sponsored by JW Lees brewery in celebration of  the 190th anniversary of the brewery . The design draws inspiration from the brewing industry, interpreting materials, features and processes in a contemporary style and composition.

The design is in part framed by glass screens, providing a foil for grasses, which are mixed with deep red and amber perennials to represent the inviting flow and texture of a freshly-poured pint.

Within the planting is a circular shallow stream, which encloses relaxing spaces to sit and relax combined with the familiar textures and elements that are synonymous with a traditional pub. The curved bench gives the feel of the serving bar and the warm and inviting atmosphere is provided by the Solus Decor fire pit and the brass details around the garden.

Making the most of a roof terrace

If you have a roof terrace or balcony, how can you make the most of it? There are some inspirational ideas out there to add value to your outside space.

Create warmth and use your outside space all year with a fire pit.

In a small space, it is still possible to add a functional but stylish fire pit that is safe to use. The Firecube is ideal and with different fuel options, it can conform to safety requirements. An optional table top also means it is multi-use.

For larger terraces or balconies, fire pits and tables will create a social area with seating positioned around. The Elevated Halo is a great example and used in residential and commercial spaces.

Look out for self-circulating and “plug and play” products. This means there is no plumbing and water is not being wasted. The Dome is a great example.

There are many designers who are experienced in designing roof top and terrace gardens which do tend to be in cities where outside space is at a premium.

How we reused wasted concrete to make Christmas trees

Over the past 17 years, Solus Decor has become synonymous with contemporary style, sophistication and of course, high quality. But what you might not know is that we operate very much under the adage of reduce, reuse, recycle. Often however, this kind of philosophy is met with logic and calculation, until now.

Recently, we were approached by renowned local artist, Robert Studer. He came to us wondering if there was a way to reuse our wasted concrete. Normally, we would recycle this concrete into road fill but he had the ingenious idea of turning it into artful Christmas trees for the Vancouver Circle Craft Show. Clearly, we agreed.

As you can see above, the base of the trees were made from leftover concrete from the end of our batches that we poured over the course of a few weeks for Robert. From this, he was able to make 40 trees in total. The bases have been covered with white tissue for effect.

The idea to make these Christmas trees was ingenious and we’re so grateful he asked us to be a part of this art project. This definitely ties in well with the Climate Smart program that we are a part which teaches us how to reduce our carbon footprint.

So you see, not only are our fire pits and fireplaces beautiful on the outside, they’re environmentally sound on the inside.

So tell us, what do you think of Robert’s Christmas tree art pieces?
