What is Anodised Aluminium?:

Anodised aluminium is aluminium that has undergone an electrochemical process, known as anodising which makes the surface durable,and corrosion-resistant. It does this by increasing the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the surface, meaning that the aluminium oxide layer  is fully integrated with the base metal rather than just being applied on top. Therefore, it won’t peel, flake, or chip like other coating techniques (e.g. powder coating). This ensures the table top is weather-resistant and stays polished for years to come.

How Our Anodised Aluminium Firepit Table Tops Are Made: 

 

  1. Cutting and Shaping

We start with large, ⅛” thick square aluminium sheets. Then each aluminium table top is laser cut into its rounded shape for accuracy and consistent quality.

  1. Creating the Brushed Finish

After cutting, the pieces go through a sanding machine that creates a brushed surface. This process is repeated several times to bevel the edges so they are satisfyingly smooth and never sharp.

  1. Preparing for Anodization

Once the brushed finish is complete, the table tops are sent to our anodizer. The first step is to strip the surface until the aluminium is clear and free of any marks, scratches, or inconsistencies.

  1. The Anodizing Process

When the surface is ready, the aluminium is dipped into a solution and coated through electrolysis. This forms a protective anodized layer that integrates with the metal rather than sitting on top of it.

  1. Durability and Expected Wear

The anodized layer is durable but not scratch-proof. Any scratches typically affect only the surface coating and will fade over time as the finish weathers evenly. However, this coating does ensure that you table top won’t rust and can withstand the elements for years to come.

On occasion, the cost of our firepits is brought into question and although we understand everyone loves a good bargain, let us prove to you why Solus Decor is worth your money.

Now we can say that our concrete is “ultra-high performance”, (UHPC) but what does that actually mean? Well, many companies use “glass reinforced concrete”, or GRFC. Which cannot compare in compressive strength or durability. As GRFC is formed in layers, they often peel, flake and disintegrate when moisture freezes beneath the surface. Solus uses Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC), engineered to withstand harsh weather, including freezing Canadian climates. Our UHPC is ideal for Northern and coastal US regions.

Additionally, our UHPC offers a compressive strength greater than 10,000 psi, resulting in a cleaner, premium finish—often likened to smooth, well-worn leather rather than the gritty texture of glass fiber. This strength also allows for an elegant, thinner 1-inch fire bowl rim.

  1. Warranty/Longevity:

The longevity of Solus products has proven time and time again to be far longer than our competitors. 10, 15, even 20 year old firepits are still working fantastically and are well-loved by our clients. Which is why we offer a 5-year warranty on all our vessels, despite the industry standard being 1 to 3 years.

Maintaining and caring for a Solus firepit is also super simple. All that is required for winter storage is one of our all-weather covers as our firebowls are designed to remain outside year-round.

Not only do our firepits continue to look great, but they also don’t compromise on heat! Thanks to our solid brass burners, which prevent corrosion and rust, their lifespan is dramatically increased. Particularly in coastal climates, where standard metal burners quickly degrade. This is why we offer an industry-leading 25-year warranty on these brass components. As the manufacturer, we can also provide immediate replacement parts if needed. (though this is rare). So you don’t have to worry about trying to source any bits and pieces should anything go wrong.

  1. Certification and safety: 

All Solus fire bowls are fully certified as an appliance under CE/UKCA (a critical requirement in smoke control areas e.g., Surrey or London). Although you may expect any firepit you buy to be up to spec and certified safe, this often isn’t the case. Proper certification across the certification boards of various countries is a costly process and requires renewal every single year! 

After some digging, we have found that many companies aren’t transparent with the certification of their firepits. Their certification is often out of date, only covering the vessel and not the burner, or aren’t certified at all! Buyers should beware, particularly when purchasing from online retailers, as they don’t require companies to have any certification whatsoever! 

Furthermore, because we understand that safety is of utmost importance, each unit comes with a set of refractory concrete firestones. These are handcast stones (made to look like real river rocks) that prevent porous lava rock from absorbing water and “popping out” of the pit when exposed to heat and flame. If you have small children or pets, we also offer glass windshields as accessories that provide a barrier between you and the open flame to prevent any accidents!

  1. Fuel Versatility: 

Not many companies offer multiple fuel options for your firepit, and even fewer the option to convert from one to the other!  Each unit includes a conversion kit, allowing it to operate on either Natural Gas (NG) or Propane (LP) simply by switching the jets. This can be handy depending on which fuel type suits your needs best, your design plans change, or if you need to relocate your fire feature.

Low maintenance, ethanol bottles mean no tank is required (that must be hidden or installed) and refueling is incredibly simple so it is highly convenient.  Low, made from renewable resources and burns cleanly with no smoke, soot or harmful gases. 
Wood Low, no “setup” is required, only the purchase of the wood. Moderate, cost depends on your local area. Moderate, ash and smoke can cause irritation and requires cleaning. Also, wood burning (compared to gas) firepits require more clearance  from your home/furniture due to fire risk.# Moderate, a renewable resource, but does produce smoke, particulates and carbon monoxide.

Conclusion

To summarise, natural gas firepits are generally the most convenient and low-cost long-term. Propane firepits on the other hand, offer more flexibility and portability, which can be handy if you’d like to switch up your seating arrangements or when moving. Ethanol fuel is clean and simple, requiring no gas line installation or tanks and hoses. However, it is important to note this is the most costly option of the bunch. Propane firepit installation: a complete guide to cylinder sizing for your BTU or kW output

 

Installing a propane firepit requires some calculations depending on the burner output.  We have created a guide to make sure you don’t waste your time or money by using the incorrect size cylinder for your firepit’s BTU or kW output.

 

To start, here is a conversion list for BTUs (for North America) to kWs (for the UK and EU) to keep everything consistent: (note kWs are rounded up)

50k BTUs – 15 kW

80K BTUs – 24 kW

108k BTUs – 31 kW (high output burner)

Next, we need to know how many Kg/h each size of propane cylinder gives out, this is shown in Table 4.3:

Table 4.4 shows the Kg/h required for the kW rating (output) of the burner:

 

Using a 31 kW rating as an example, one 31 kW burner requires 2.263 kg/h of propane vapour.

In table 4.3, we can see that a 19 kg cylinder gives off 1.344 Kg/h

We then simply divide the desired heat input of the burner in Kg/h by the cylinder size in Kg/h. So, 2.263 ÷ 1.344 = 1.684

Rounding this number up, approximately 1.7, 19 kg tanks are needed for a 31 kW burner firepit. Therefore, you will need two cylinders to power your firepit.

Why using propane vapour input just won’t work:

Using the same example as above, one 19 Kg cylinder can only deliver 18.8 kW. So, If you hook up a 19 Kg cylinder to a 31 kW burner, it’ll work for some time but that depends on the ambient temperature. However, the cylinder will  ice up, starting from the base and rising to the top on the outside. Then, the cylinder will shut itself down to prevent liquid from being pulled out (an inbuilt safety feature). Following this, it will remain locked out until all the ice has dissipated, which might take a couple of hours.

Outdoor gas firepits are a beautiful way to bring warmth and ambiance to your patio or garden. But when it comes to liquid propane (LPG) firepits, bigger isn’t always better—especially when we’re talking about kWs.

 

What Exactly Are kWs?

A kW (kilowatt) is a unit of power equal to 1,000 watts, used to measure the rate at which electrical energy is used by a device. In simple terms:

  • Higher kW = more fuel burned per hour = more heat output.
     However, higher kWs don’t always translate to a better or warmer experience — especially in outdoor settings where wind, air temperature, and flame design all play a role.

For propane firepits, what matters most isn’t just the kW number, but how efficiently that energy is used to create an even, comfortable, and safe flame.

The Danger of High kW Burners

Many firepit manufacturers advertise ultra–high-output burners, ranging anywhere from 53 kW to over 180 kW. While these numbers might sound impressive, they come with serious safety concerns.

Any LPG firepit carries a risk, as gas can accumulate faster than it burns, particularly if the burner design or ventilation is poor. If propane builds up inside the vessel and is ignited, it can lead to an explosion. The higher the kW rating, the faster gas can accumulate, increasing the risk dramatically. Furthermore, high-kW burners often overheat internal components, shortening the lifespan of ignition systems, valves, and fittings. You’ll also go through fuel alarmingly fast — sometimes emptying a standard 20 lb propane tank in less than an hour.

What’s a Safe and Sensible kW Range?

The Importance of CE certification for Outdoor Gas Fire Pits

What are CE, UK/CA marks and why do they matter?

CE Marking (Conformité Européenne): This is the European market’s mark of conformity. For gas appliances, it means the appliance meets essential safety, health, environmental, and performance requirements set out in Regulation (EU) 2016/426, together with any relevant harmonised European standards.

When a product is certified under all these bodies CE , it assures that it has passed rigorous third-party testing in multiple jurisdictions and adheres to high safety, supply quality, emission and electrical/electronic safety standards.  It is the same standard that is used for UK/CA – in essence the UK was to  implement its own safety standard, but it is exactly the same as the CE mark. However, it is likely that  the UK will be heading back to the using just the CE mark in future.  

Beyond safety, there are legal and insurance implications. In all  jurisdictions of the UK and  EU, selling or installing a gas-burning appliance without required certification is illegal. If something goes wrong (injury, damage, fire), insurance may refuse claims if uncertified products were involved. The gas fitter should be looking for the tag and will not install it if it does not have one.

The Risks of Uncertified or Poorly Certified Firepits

Buying a firepit without up-to-date, proper certification, or where only part of it is certified carries risks. Gas firepits are complex, they combine:

  1. A burner system: mixing gas (propane, natural gas), ignition mechanism, flame control.
  2. Vessel: the housing, flame bowl, tray, materials exposed to heat.
  3. Electronics: ignition spark, safety devices (flame failure, thermocouples), possibly remote controls or sensors.

If any of those components fails, the results can be dangerous:

False sense of safety: Products without certification often lack essential safety components such as gas tightness, electronic safety, flame failure device etc., leading to:

  • Gas leaks → risk of fire or explosion.
  • Poor flame stability → back-flash, flame blow-out, or flame traveling into unintended parts.
  • Faulty electronics / ignition → misfires, delayed ignition (gas buildup), or no shut-off in case of a fault.
  • Inferior materials – enclosure or  vessel → warping, cracking, structural failure, which may lead to fire-spread or collapse.  Such examples include heat build up inside of the vessel. 
  • Carbon monoxide or toxic by-products if combustion is incomplete or ventilation is inadequate.

Substandard components: Without regulations, firepits can be manufactured with cheap burners, unsafe gas hoses, low-grade metal or welds in the vessel, or unapproved electronics. This leads to early failure or dangerous malfunctions.

Non-compliance with laws: Without the necessary CE marking, you may run into problems with import restrictions, installation permissions,and local building/fire safety codes.

Insurance refusal: If damage occurs that can be traced back to an uncertified appliance, insurers may deny claims.

Environmental or health hazards: Improper combustion can produce excess carbon monoxide; materials may emit harmful fumes; flame or heat may damage surroundings.

How to Check if a Firepit is Properly Certified

When you’re assessing a prospective firepit (from Solus or another company), here are things to look for to verify up-to-date, full certification:

CE Marking Is there a CE mark physically on the product (not just on the packaging)? In the case of a fire pit burner, the burner itself must be marked.  Does a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) exist and mention the relevant regulation (e.g. GAR, EN standards)? Is there a Notified Body number (if needed)?
ANSI / CSA Mark (for North America) These cannot be sold in the EU even if they have  ANSI/CSA marks on components (burner, electronics)? A separate CE mark is needed.
What parts are certified Sometimes only burners are certified, or only electronics; the full product may not be. Make sure all key parts: burner, vessel, electronics are covered.
Technical documentation Can the company supply the test reports / certificates (or summary)? Do the documents list relevant standards (e.g. EN 298 for burner control, applicable EN or ISO gas appliance standards, etc.)?  (Link to Solus Certification HERE)
Date of certification Standards evolve. A certificate from 10+ years ago may refer to old regulations. Ensure certifications are recent and valid under current laws.
Manufacturer transparency Reliable manufacturers will publish or make available the certification info easily. If someone is reluctant or vague, that’s a red flag. CSE Safety approved is not the same thing as a CE Mark.  The CE Mark has a certificate specifying this to back it up and should be on the web site for verification.  A common practice is to indicate that the burner/vessel is certified but without anything to back it up. Stating that a product is built to “CE standards” means absolutely nothing, and is often used to hide out-of-date CE certification.  It is the responsibility of the purchaser to verify. 

The testing that one undergoes to get this CE mark ( UKCA ) is extensive – it requires each and every burner leaving the facility to be bench tested.  This means it goes through a series of tests to ensure that it does not leak, it ignites and shuts off in a timed manner.  No end of tests to ensure its safety.  The audit team then comes out once a year to determine that in fact their regulations and guidelines are being followed – without fail.

For years, wood-burning fire pits have been a popular choice, offering a powerful heat source, affordability, and the flexibility to move them around the garden as needed. But they aren’t without downsides. Smoke that stings your eyes and a strong smell left on your clothes and in your hair can be offputting and are common complaints amongst our clients. 

Sussex, like much of the UK, has several designated smoke control areas. Local councils in boroughs such as Crawley and Brighton enforce restrictions on the burning of certain fuels. In these zones, the use of wood-burning appliances is heavily regulated. Only authorised smokeless fuels that have been approved by Defra are permitted, and traditional logs or kindling are not allowed. You can check if this applies to your local area using the Defra interactive map here.

However, even outside of these areas, if your neighbours consider your wood-burning fire pit a nuisance, your local council is obligated to investigate. This could incur fines of up to £1000 and render your firepit unusable.

How to Light Manual Ignition With Flame Supervision Device Fire Pits: A Step-by-Step Guide

Our manual ignition fire pits with a flame supervision device (pilot and thermocouple)  are easy to operate, offering a warm, inviting atmosphere for any outdoor space in seconds. Follow these simple steps to safely and effectively light your fire pit.

What You Need:
  1. Lighter (we recommend a candle/bbq lighter)
  2. Ignition key
  3. Connected Gas Source

 

Steps to Light Your Fire Pit:

1. Setting Up the Fire Pit/Basic Components:

  • Ensure your gas source is readily connected, whether it be propane or natural gas.
  • At the centre of the fire pit you should find the wind guard surrounding the pilot light. This ensures the pilot assembly and thermocouple/temp sensor can function correctly.
  • The pilot light emerges from the side of the pilot assembly, allowing the temperature sensor to heat up. Once it is warm, the gas valve can open and the feature can fully ignite.

2. Prepare Your Equipment:

  • Confirm the gas source is securely connected.
  • If you are using propane, open your propane cylinder, checking that the regulator’s reset button (if present) is pressed firmly.

3. Open the Gas Valve and Ignite the Pilot Light:

  • Insert the key into the valve and turn it all the way to the left (anticlockwise). This action opens the valve fully.
  • Hold down the button on the side of the fire pit
  • Place the flame from your lighter between the pilot assembly and the thermocouple. You should hear the sound of gas flowing.
  • Maintain the flame for 10-15 seconds to allow the pilot light to ignite and stay lit.

4. Verify and Ignite:

  • After 10-15 seconds, remove the lighter, you should be able to hear that the pilot light is still lit
  • Step back and release the button. The fire pit should now be fully ignited and ready for use.

Natural Gas Ban Reversed in Vancouver, BC

As part of the “fireplace and fire pit community” in BC, we have been following the back and forth battle between the Vancouver City Council and new construction as they attempt to ban natural gas from these new build both residential and commercially.  In a rather historic and controversial decision, Vancouver City Council has reversed its ban on the use of natural gas for the heating of homes and buildings.  It is important to note that this ban never included cooking appliances, fireplaces or fire pits but it did complicate things because it require you to have a separate system for heating.  However, this has now been overturned.  New construction will be able to heat homes using natural gas and reducing the costs of building new homes and buildings.

We believe the reversal has resulted from the Council recognising the reality of our situation in BC (as in many other places). The last number of years we have been importing power from California (and elsewhere), using their coal and natural gas plants to meet our electrical needs.
