Memorial Garden at Trinity Western University

A scholarship and courtyard renovation honour the life of Jordan Thiessen.

A very special fire pit was installed at the Trinity Western University in British Columbia.

It is in memory of the life of Jordan Thiessen who was a student at the university. During his time at the university Jordan felt that the unloved and uncared for Douglas Courtyard could be a beautiful space. With some planting and a fire pit it would offer a place for students to relax and enjoy on campus.  Something he shared with his parents during a campus visit.

When Jordan sadly lost his life on October 18 2012, just 12 days after he married his university sweetheart, the family wanted to do something in his memory. His parents, Shirley and Carey set up the Jordan Thiessen Memorial Scholarship endowment but they wanted to do more. They recognised the deep impact that the University had on Jordan’s short life. They felt that making over the Douglas courtyard would not only honour Jordan, but it would also benefit all future students. Shirley threw herself into raising funds for both the scholarship and the courtyard project. The Jordan Thiessen Memorial Courtyard was dedicated September 14, 2013. On what would have been Jordan’s 24th birthday.

The memorial garden is now a wonderful place for students to enjoy, which gives great pleasure to Jordan’s parents.  If you would like to give to the courtyard project, or to the Jordan Thiessen Memorial Scholarship, please email Shirley Thiessen at [email protected].

Feature Project: Maui Vacation Home

We are featuring a recent residential installation as part of a fantastic project in Maui, Hawaii.

The client made contact with us directly as they began to look at the landscaping of the exterior of the major development they were undertaking in Maui, Hawaii. As things progressed with the majority of the build their attention soon turned to the landscaping element of the project and how they would develop this to compliment the architectural design of the main house.  The client is Canadian and were familiar with the Solus product given its Canadian roots and despite living overseas for many years they were keen to incorporate an element of the Canadian design into their new beach side home.

Feature Project Maui with Halo Low 36″

The overall concept and design of this sensational space was designed by the prestigious architect, Rick Ryniak.  Rick Ryniak is a Hawaii based architect who has built a solid reputation for creating sensational designs for the rich and famous in Hawaii. Rick’s design ethos is built around creating designs that work for his client’s lifestyle by understanding the way they live to incorporate these elements into his designs.  This house is no exception and we are thrilled to see our products in such incredible surroundings.

Feature Project Maui with Halo Low 36″

The client opted for the Halo Low 36″ fire pit to compliment their landscape design and architecture. Each Halo cradles its flame, allowing the flickering fire light to reflect on its polished concrete surfaces.  Recessed bases create the impression that the concrete tops float, adding visual lightness for a modern feel.  The Halo Low is available in 36” and 48”with the option of natural gas, bio ethanol fuel and liquid propane making then easily adaptable for any outdoor space.

The Various Benefits of a Water Feature

Whether you’re planning out a landscape design for a private residence, or in the final stages for decorating a hotel lobby, adding a water feature will be beneficial.

This is because among the numerous benefits, water has been proven to act as a calming agent for the mind. According to Wallace J. Nichols, a marine biologist, “We are beginning to learn that our brains are hardwired to react positively to water and that being near it can calm and connect us, increase innovation and insight, and even heal what’s broken,” Nichols writes in  Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do. Happiness, however, is only one of the benefits. In this article we’ll take a look at how water features are not only benefitting individuals but also the environment.

One of the more unknown benefits of a water feature is that it reduces noise pollution. This is heavily dependent on the type of water feature that is installed. For instance, a stagnant pond is only going to provide minimal noise reduction whereas waterfalls and bubbling fountains are known to absorb noise to a greater extent. Part of the noise reduction is because it has its own soothing sound that an individual is likely to tune into. So it allows them to block out the sound of a barking dog, or the bustle in a lobby.

In addition to reducing noise, a water feature also helps filter the air in two ways. The first is by attracting dust particles due to the negative ions emitted from the flowing water. The second is through the formation of water vapors that help filter the air.

Another benefit of a water feature is that it acts as a focal point for gathering. This happens regardless of the water feature being a pool, fountain, waterfall, or pond. Since people are naturally attracted to water, it means that the conversations will continue longer and the individuals within the circle are more likely to bond.

Solus Decor Water Dome

Along with a water feature providing a focal point, it also provides individuality to the landscape. This occurs through the the size, shape, colour, design and placement of the feature. It also provides movement to an otherwise still area in the form of the water rushing and with wildlife visiting the water feature.

Another benefit is that the water features require minimal maintenance – as long as they aren’t a swimming pool. Essentially fountains, waterfalls, and ponds continuously recirculate the water from within. This not only limits the amount of water used but also reduces the chances of bacteria growing out of control. Of course, some maintenance must be done initially like filling up the water feature upon installation, but the majority of it is relatively maintenance free.

Solus Decor Scupper

Perhaps one of the more appealing aspects of a water feature is that it raises the real estate value. This is because a water feature enhances the look of the property as it creates a harmonious and relaxing atmosphere.

Overall, a water feature is the answer for you if you’re looking to benefit the environment, the landscape, or yourself.

Helix Architecture + Design, The Brass on Baltimore Club

The Brass on Baltimore is a unique event space, which seamlessly combines the old world charm of a historic social club with the modern luxury of society today.

The Kansas City Club as it was formerly know was originally formed in 1882, one of the premier social clubs in the Midwest. Like many clubs at the time the purpose was to cultivate social and business relationships between leading businessmen in Kansas City.  So historic is the building and architecture that is is appears on the National Register of Historic Places. The building was designed in the Gothic Revival style by the Kansas City architectural firm of Smith, Rea and Lovitt, construction of the Kansas City Club Building was started in 1918 and completed in 1922.

The club has now been given a new lease of life to create a unique event space by the Kansas City based architects, Helix Architecture & Design.  Helix have beautifully mixed both old and new in the club to create a luxury event space, whilst retaining the history of the building and looking to the future with contemporary elements.  The majority of the spaces have retained the period features from the early 1900’s where hand-hewn walnut, carved stone, stained glass, and gilded plaster were often used.

The contemporary elements of the building are exemplified on the fantastic roof terrace with expansive views across the city, which also features a Solus Elevated Halo fire pit to create the perfect location for cocktails and canapes, an after dinner drink or a quiet spot for a bride and groom to reflect on their special day.

Feature Project: A residential redevelopment in San Francisco

San Francisco fire pit

Our feature project is a look back at a fantastic redevelopment in the Noe Valley area of San Fancisco as featured in Dwell.

A tech industry couple made the decision to make the move from Palo Alto to seek out a new life in San Francisco.  They were keen to create a contemporary property that could take on their style and smart technology that encompasses their day to day lives.  After much searching they eventually found the right property in the Noe Valley area of San Francisco but it needed considerable work to make their dream a reality.  In order to make their dream a reality they called on architect Christi Azevedo. Christi is a San Fancisco based architect with an impressive portfolio with an eclectic mix of property styles who is well know in the San Francisco area for her expertise in giving worn out houses a new lease of life.  The property in Noa Valley was a compartmentalized 1970s style property and Christi Azevedo transformed the property into an open plan living space with an emphasis on indoor outdoor living, by careful focus on the materials used both indoors and outdoors.

Rear Terrace of San Francisco Project by Christi Azevedo

The external facade of the building was transformed by the use cedar boards that were charred using the ancient Japanese art of shou sugi ban. The couple researched the technique extensively, and even considered doing it themselves, before Azevedo convinced them to outsource the job to a Texas studio, Delta Millworks.  The couple were thrilled with the results and love the contemporary back drop this creates for the outdoor living space that is opened up fully thanks to the installation of bifold doors.  To complete the renovation of the exterior the rear patio was raised to bring in line with the level of the kitchen and the original redwood decking was reused and supplemented with recycled pieces from other projects.  The couple added a Solus Hemi fire pit to complete this well designed outdoor living space. The couple selected the cinder finish to compliment the overall color scheme to the external facade.
